Experiencing the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland
Saariselka is one of the best places in Europe to see the Northern Lights. The lights appear on many clear nights between late August and mid April, especially in Northern Lapland where light pollution is extremely low.
The Aurora forms when solar particles interact with the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field, creating glowing colours that roll across the sky. Clear conditions are essential, which is why heading north of the Arctic Circle increases your chances.
In Saariselka, the sky felt sharp and bright, even before the lights appeared. When the Aurora finally showed, it started bright white, before it evolved into soft bright green waves that moved silently across the night sky.

I stayed at Lapland Hotels Riekonlinna, a warm and peaceful hotel located near the centre of the village. The atmosphere was calm, the rooms were tired and basic, but so well insulated that opening the window for minus 25 celsius ventilation was also a must!. That said everything felt clean and organised. I appreciated how easy it was to relax after long days outdoors. The lighting was soft, the layout was simple, and the whole hotel felt comfortable from the moment I arrived.
The property also had direct access to snowy walking paths, which made it easy to step outside whenever I wanted to look at the night sky. Staff were friendly, helpful, and clear in their communication, which I always value when travelling.

Tours usually include a stop at a wooden hut to warm up by a fire, cook sausages, and drink hot berry juice or mulled wine. This was one of my favourite moments deep in a wooded forest, we parked on a frozen lake.

Gentle, quiet, and perfect for photos.
Snowshoeing and hiking
Ideal for exploring solo, with plenty of silent trails. Ensure you wear a four-season snowsuit as temperatures regularly plummet to -25 celsius to -30 celsius during the winter.
Tobogganing and snow biking
Simple, fun, and great for short bursts of activity.
The village has cafés, bars, restaurants, a convenience store, and a fuel station. Everything is compact and easy to move between.

How to Get to Saariselka Winter Santa Lapland
Finnair operates regular flights from Helsinki Airport (HEL) to Ivalo Airport (IVL). This is the nearest airport to Saariselka.
The Saariselka Ski Bus waits outside the terminal during the winter season. I found the journey smooth and safe, thanks to experienced Finnish drivers who handle ice roads and frozen rivers and lakes with ease. Tickets start from around 10 euros for adults and 5 euros for children. The bus drops passengers directly outside their hotel or lodging, which made my arrival simple and stress free.

Final Thoughts
Saariselka is a winter destination I would happily return to. The slow pace and snowy landscapes, along with my memories of snowmobile safaris and the excellent Northern Lights conditions, make it a brilliant place to relax and explore.
