This guide to Patapat Viaduct Pagudpud is based on my experience driving one of northern Luzon’s most iconic coastal landmarks.
TL:DR
We visited the Patapat Viaduct on our way to Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte. The mountainside curves, coastal scenery, and open views made this stop a highlight of the trip.
Why We Stopped at the Patapat Viaduct Pagudpud
We wanted to see the Patapat Viaduct because it is one of the most iconic coastal roads in Northern Luzon. It looked even better in real life, with steep mountains on one side and the bright blue sea on the other. The engineering feat felt like a man-made corridor was created between the sea and the cliffs.

The Drive Along the Mountainside
The road wraps around the steep mountainside, and the views changed with every bend. We stopped at one of the safe lay-bys to take photos and enjoy the breeze coming from the water. The waves hit the rocks below, and the coastal air made the stop feel peaceful and refreshing.
Our Sari-Sari Store Drink and View Stop After the Viaduct
We stopped at a small cafe and souvenir shop selling inexpensive t-shirts and fridge magnets and much needed water. In conditions like this, staying hydrated while travelling becomes essential, especially in heat and humidity.
The sari-sari store is called Market Place. You will find it located at the end of the viaduct on the left. This is a good parking spot to look back across the full length. The store is opposite the entry point of the Kalbario Patapat Natural Park on the Pan-Philippine Highway, Pagudpud.
The Kalbario Patapat Natural Park is a protected mountain area featuring a waterfall, trail, scenic coastal highway, and lush greenery. Be particularly mindful of venomous snakes and poisonous centipedes in long grassy areas around here.

A Road Built for Safety and Scenery
The Patapat Viaduct is more than a beautiful viewpoint. It was built to reduce landslides and keep the route to Pagudpud open throughout the year. Seeing the road follow the natural curve of the mountain helped us appreciate the engineering behind it. It felt smooth, safe, and perfect for a scenic drive.

Final Thoughts on Patapat Viaduct Pagudpud
If you are heading to Pagudpud, we recommend following the Pan-Philippine Highway. You’ll need to follow this further clockwise and stop safely at the Patapat Viaduct. It is quick to reach, easy to explore, and offers some of the best coastal views in Ilocos Norte. From the nearby Caunayan Point, the sea stretches all the way to Taiwan. However, the distance between this part of Ilocos Norte and Taiwan is around 359 kilometres (223 miles). Therefore only the Bashi Channel separates Batanes. The northernmost province in the Philippines, and also the smallest. By both population and land area, from Taiwan to the north.
Also in Ilocos Norte, there is plenty to see around the municipality of Paoay. Here I visited and wrote a post all about the infamous earthquake-resistant Paoay Church which was built in the 1500’s. I also filmed nearby attractions including Malacañang of the North, Batac City empanadas, and the Suba Paoay Sand Dunes. Which you can watch on my YouTube channel by clicking the highlighted links.
If you plan to venture to Ilocos Sur which is further south. Check out my guide to Historic Vigan City especially if you are planning a wider Northern Luzon trip. And if a visit to Vigan City is on your agenda. I also reviewed the RG Jar Factory which you should definitely consider. Along with the nearby Hidden Garden (If you can find it!) There are bars and restaurants in there too!.
