Dining at Sukhothai Restaurant – Harrogate

thai restaurant decoration

This Sukhothai Restaurant Harrogate review is based on my most recent visit. Sukhothai Harrogate continues to be one of my most reliable restaurants in town. The food is consistently authentic, full of flavour, and built around fresh Thai ingredients like sweet basil which I personally love. Service has been excellent during all five of my visits, and the menu is clear, detailed, and easy to navigate. Both my starter and main were fragrant, colourful, and cooked perfectly.

Sukhothai Restaurant Harrogate Review: What I Ordered

This Sukhothai Restaurant Harrogate review covers my most recent dining experience at the restaurant.

I have eaten at Sukhothai Harrogate five times over the last few years, and every visit has been consistently good. The combination of friendly service, proper Thai flavours, and a well-structured menu makes it somewhere I always enjoy returning to. It is located on Cheltenham Parade, close to the Jubilee multi-storey car park, so it is easy to get to even mid-week.

One thing that stands out to me every single time is their use of sweet basil. This is not the same as the Italian-style basil most people are used to. Sweet basil has an aromatic, almost aniseed-like flavour that lifts every dish. It is delicate yet distinctive, and Sukhothai use it properly in both their seafood and meat dishes.

Menu Layout and Thai Terminology

Another reason I like Sukhothai, including their other locations in Chapel Allerton, Leeds and Leeds City Centre, is the way they present their menu. It includes Thai names, English translations, and clear spice levels. It makes ordering easier and more interesting.

Proteins:
  • Gai – Chicken
  • Pou – Crab
  • Pla – Fish
  • Plamueg – Squid
  • Gung – Prawn

  • Talay – Mixed Seafood (Prawn, Squid, Green Lipped Mussels)

Spice Level:

🌶️ Mild 🌶️🌶️ Moderate 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spicy

🙏 Signature Dish

It is simple, clear, and informative, which I appreciate.

What We Ordered

I visited with a friend on this occasion, and we ordered the following dishes from their extensive menu. The menu codes and descriptions are written exactly as shown.

My Starter

Seafood starter from my Sukhothai Restaurant Harrogate review with mixed seafood in aromatic broth.

No.16: OP Mor Din Talay
Mixed seafood, cooked with oyster sauce, galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves, shallot, sweet basil and red chilli

This arrived as an aromatic and colourful white bowl, full of fresh sweet basil and vibrant seafood. Although the menu marks it with just one chilli icon, the broth was far spicier than I expected. It even made my eyes water at one point, but in a good way. I was still determined to finish it, and I am sure this provided some mild amusement for both the waitress and my friend. Once the initial heat settled, the flavours came through clearly, especially the sweet basil and lemongrass, which lifted the dish and kept it fragrant rather than overwhelming.

Friend’s Starter

No.17: Crispy Seaweed Rolls
A mixture of minced chicken and prawns, rolled inside sheets of nori seaweed served with sweet chilli sauce.

He enjoyed the portion size and its crunchy texture and the balanced filling. It is lighter than it sounds and worked well as a starter.

My Main Course

Main course dish featured in my Sukhothai Restaurant Harrogate review with sliced duck and colourful vegetables.

No.X2: Pad Phed Nam Prik Pao
Translated into ‘fried chilli paste’, sliced duck breast with chilli oil, sweet basil, mushroom, spring onion, carrot and peppers. Exquisite.

This is one of my favourite dishes on their menu. It is rich, colourful, and full of flavour, with the sweet basil coming through perfectly. The duck is tender, and the vegetables keep the dish balanced.

I paired it with brown rice which was a decent sized portion and helped absorb the sauce.

Friend’s Main Course

No.D1 Four Season Duck
Roasted sliced duck breast cooked in a spicy Thai red curry sauce with coconut milk, pineapple and grapes. A unique and special dish.

This is a standout dish because of the combination of fruit and heat. My friend said it was both unusual and enjoyable.
